MINISTRY INTERN, 2010-2011

CENTRAL PA CONFERENCE
BOARD OF ORDAINED MINISTRY
(ENLISTMENT & INTERPRETATION COMMITTEE – E & I)

The Mission:
United Methodist college students from Central Pennsylvania Conference may apply to
become a ministry intern in a local church in the Central PA Conference. In return for 10-12
hours of ministry each week of the academic year, $5,000 will be paid directly to the student’s
college or university as a scholarship grant. Half of the $5,000 will be paid during the fall
semester and half during the spring semester of the internship year. At least TWO internships
will be provided.

The Intern:
The ministry intern must be an active member of a United Methodist Church within the
bounds of The Central PA Conference (for at least on year) and be at least a sophomore in good
academic standing at a college or university within the bounds of the Central PA Conference OR
in close proximity to the Annual Conference. The ministry intern must submit a voluntary
disclosure of any past criminal history and allegations of criminal history, and agree to sign a
waiver of confidentiality allowing the CPC to secure background checks necessary for this
position (background checks need to be in compliance with the CPC Safe Sanctuary Policy).

The ministry intern is expected to be engaged in ministry for approximately 10-12
hours/week during the weeks that school is in session. The intern’s application will require basic
biographical information and personal references (with at least one reference from his/her home
congregation). In addition, the student will be asked to provide a statement of his/her hopes for
the internship, a sense of his/her own gifts for ministry, and a statement of his/her faith journey.

The Mentoring Relationship:
Once decisions have been made about the interns that will be selected, interested local
churches will be contacted near the college or university town of the intern. Care will be taken to
select not only churches, but pastors who will serve as caring, instructive mentors. Ideally, once
that match is made, interns and supervising pastors will meet together and develop a covenant
relationship for their time at the church. During the school year, effort should be made for intern
and supervising pastor to meet at least weekly.

A meeting of mentors and interns may occur with the E & I Intern Director before the
internships begin. Contact will be made well in advance if this will occur.

A mid-year report (due by December 20, 2010) and an end-of-school-year report (due by
May 20, 2011) are required of intern and supervising pastor. These reports can be sent to the E &
I Intern Director.
